The elements of a good TV news story are pretty simple: strong interviews, video with action and great natural sound. Before you run out with your ideas, take some time to clearly develop your story.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Do general research on the topic, issue or subject you plan to cover. Look to see what’s been written about it on the Internet or other media.

  2. Step 2

Decide on the focus of your story. Try to find a fresh angle that hasn’t been done before.

  3. Step 3

Visualize what elements are needed to tell the story: strong video, good interviews and natural sound/audio.

  4. Step 4

Identify whom you should interview. Look for people in your immediate network, referrals from colleagues, or any media sources for leads.

  5. Step 5

Create an outline of the potential flow of the story. Avoid the urge to write the script before you do your interviews; this might cause you to overlook new, unanticipated details that might lead to a better story.
