Succulents could be described as the perfect plant. They are beautiful, hardy, low maintenance and quick-growing. A succulent garden in a container allows for easy mobility, bringing the garden indoors when necessary (they don’t love snow). Creating a container garden is a fun and fast way to bring beauty to your home.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Container; a shallow one works well. Make sure it has holes for proper drainage.
  • Soil; a succulent-specific soil mix can be purchased at garden centers
  • Gravel to cover the holes and allow for proper drainage
  • Succulents or succulent cuttings from a garden. A variety is best, such as aloe vera, hens and chicks, sedum and jade plants.
  1. Step 1

Layer the bottom of the container with gravel and then soil.

  2. Step 2

Play around with the arrangement of the succulents. Keep tall plants toward the back of the container. What colors work well together? How about the plants’ architecture? The triangles of the aloe vera mix nicely with the tear drops of the hens and chicks.

  3. Step 3

Plant them by plunging them into the soil. There are no special planting needs for succulents other than good drainage. Enjoy the view.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep the soil dry and well drained. Succulents like to be thirsty. Too much moisture will slowly kill them.
  • Succulents are a tight-knit group. They like to be close together.
  • If taking cuttings from a garden, allow the succulents to form a scab. This takes a little less than two weeks.
  • Succulent container gardens make great gifts.
