News anchors and reporters weren’t born with that newsy, modulated voice. They had to practice and believe it or not, some even went to speech coaches for help. If you want to become an anchor or reporter or just want to see if you've got the chops, then practice and vocal exercises can help you reach your goal.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Newspaper or script to read
  • Tape Recorder
  • Pen for marking newspaper or script
  1. Step 1

Prepare by stretching and taking deep breaths. Warm up your voice by slowly humming—start at a high pitch and end at a low one.

  2. Step 2

Understand what you are reading, so you can identify the right tone to use. Maintain a fluid, conversational sound by pretending that you are telling a story to a friend or relative.

  3. Step 3

Mark your script by putting a slash after a sentence or word to indicate where you will pause. Underline any words that will be emphasized.

  4. Step 4

Practice reading your script out loud and try to modulate your voice. In other words, speak deeply from your diaphragm.

  5. Step 5

Enunciate each word by speaking forcefully and clearly. Pronounce vowel sounds but not consonants.

  6. Step 6

Remember to breathe in between takes.

  7. Step 7

Tape yourself when you’re ready. Make a note of what you need to improve upon and apply this.
