How to Mediate with Metta
Step1
Most people let their desires and ego cause suffering in their lives. This is a direct experience of the Dhamma, of the Four Noble Truths: Life means suffering, the origin of suffering is attachment, the cessation of suffering is attainable, and the path of cessation of suffering. We tend to lock ourselves into a condition of suffering by wanting things to be different from what they are.
Step2
Metta has been translated as the meditation on loving-kindness or compassion. We all need to use this to helps use love ourselves.
Step3
Practicing Metta Mediation allows one to engage in self-love, forgiveness, the love for others. Metta starts with ones self then progress to others.
Step4
The first part of Metta Mediation is to perform Metta Mantras to help ourselves achieved self-love. Start by using the first part of the Metta mantra with May I be…. Then adding the desire you want to achieve, like happy and peaceful. May I be happy and peaceful. I like to use May I be a strong today, May I be happy today, May I be kind to others, May I be self-loving today.
Step5
The second part is to learn to compassionate to others. Make it part of your daily routine to be kind to others. It can be a simple as opening a door for someone. Try and past this teaching on to your children, after all they are this world’s future. They need to know how to be compassionate and self-loving also.
Step6
Remember that you need to start with loving yourself than move to others.
When you use the Metta Mantra for others you need to replace the word I with you. Here is a traditional Metta Mantra for you to chant for someone else.
Step7
May you be safe from inner and outer harm.
May you be happy and peaceful.
May you be healthy and strong.
May you care for yourself and be joyfully.
