Before there was karaoke, people had to entertain their quest with card games, board games, story telling and most of all, with music. There was always someone who could or would step up to play a piano or a guitar. Every person that knows how to play the guitar has been where you are and had to put in the time to learn. Well, the guitar is still a popular choice, and most people think they have to be a pro to play one. That is wrong. Just know a few simple chords, and you could be entertaining people for hours.

Things You'll Need:

  • Guitar
  1. Step 1

Learn the basic anatomy of a guitar. Strings from the thickest down to the thinnest are known as low E, A, D, G, B and high E. Frets are the slightly raised metal bars that cross the neck. When forming a chord you place your fingers on strings directly behind the frets. The numbering starts at the top of the neck.

  2. Step 2

Get familiar with these marks and the strings. Hold each string down and strum to get use to hearing the sounds that the different strings make.

  3. Step 3

Start with a G major chord. Reach your middle finger across the neck to hold down the low E string on the third fret. Look at our strings again: low E is the first string. Place your index finger on the A string’s second fret. Leave three string open and cover the high E, the last string, with your ring finger or pinky finger. Now, strum.

  4. Step 4

Now try the easy E minor. Simply place your middle finger on the A string’s second fret and your ring finger on the D string's second fret. Strum.

  5. Step 5

Last, learn the D major chord. Don’t strum the top two strings. Let the D string be open. Press your index finger on the G string’s second fret, your ring finger on the B string’s third fret and your middle finger on the high E’s second fret.

  6. Step 6

Now, it is up to you to practice learning these three chords, and once you have mastered them, try playing them one after each other. You are now on your way to play the entertainment for your next get-together.
