The French knitter is the same concept of the spool knitter. It is a creative way to knit in a tub, like I-cord, but without any needles. The knitting tubing can then be used for embellishments, handles, to make jewelry and other great crafts. If you use different fibers you will get exquisite piece of jewelry. This necklace is simple, but elegant. You will simply be knitting a tube that will then be formed into three loops, and the ends woven through those loops create the three knot effect.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • French knitter
  • Brown silk yarn
  • Bell caps
  • Clap closures
  1. Step 1

Start knitting on the French knitter. Put the end of the yarn through the hole of the French knitter. Put the yarn around the first peg in a clockwise manner. Then, continue this around to all pegs until they all have one loop on them. This is the first row. You need two rows to actually start knitting. These two rows are like the cast on with needles. So, continue to loop each peg in the same manner. Once you have two loops on each peg, you will take your needle and pull the bottom loop up over the peg. Continue this until all pegs have just one loop. Now, you need to add more loop, like previously instructed. This is the same technique used on the round knifty loom.

  2. Step 2

Make sure that you keep the loops loose, so that it will be easy enough to lift off. But you don't want to be too loose or your knits will not be the same size and could alter the look of the necklace.

  3. Step 3

You will continue to knit until you have a length of 18 inches.

  4. Step 4

Then, bind off the knitted tube. I run my tail under the last loops with a needle and pull off. Secure with a knot.

  5. Step 5

To create the triple knot center, locate the center of the necklace. We will be making loops that look like a backward "e." Make three loops close together. Take the end of the tube and weave over and under the loops. Tighten slowly so that you can make sure that the knots stay in shape.

  6. Step 6

Glue to bell horns with closures on them to the ends of the knitted tubes to finish off the necklace. Some people just tie the necklace on.

Tips & Warnings
  • You could slide beads onto you working string and have the beads come snug up to the pegs to add a beaded rope look.
