Step 1
Four Cylinder vs. V6 and V8
Many four cylinder cars today provide more than enough power for passing and merging. The initial price of the car will be lower than a V6 or V8 and you will save money on gas. -
Step 2
Standard or Automatic Transmisssion
An automatic transmission adds about $700 to the cost of a car. It is also not as efficient as a manual shift car. If you can drive a stick, enjoy driving a manual transmission car and aren't likely to get stuck in a great deal of traffic, this could be a good option for you. -
Step 3
Hybrid Cars
Hybrids like the Prius and Honda Civic get the best mileage. Hybrids such as the Ford Escape and the Lexus RX400h are SUVs with both good fuel economy and excellent performance. -
Step 4
Diesel Cars
While not permitted everywhere, new diesel technology makes these cars a good competitor with hybrid cars. -
Step 5
Electric and Natural Gas Cars
Keep an eye out for new developments in natural Gas and electric cars, as more research is devoted to finding alternatives to our dependence on oil. -
Step 6
4-Wheel Drive
If fuel economy is your goal, consider an all-wheel drive car instead of true 4-Wheel Drive. These are lighter in weight than 4WD.
