Now that you’ve said “I do” and taken your honeymoon, it’s time to settle into life as newlyweds. But it’s not as easy as it sounds. In fact, most people say that the first year of marriage can be the toughest. After all, you’re trying to get used to living with another person. Just follow these simple tips to learn how to begin life as newlyweds.

Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

  • Open communication
  • A budget

Step1
Keep the lines of communication open. The worst mistake you can make as a newlywed couple is trying to keep secrets from each other. The best way to nurture your new relationship is to be honest and open about your lives. Also, take time to discuss your future plans, including your job goals and intentions for your future children.
Step2
Formulate a budget together. Neither one of you should have complete control of the income. After all, your money is supporting both of you, so it should be something that you plan together. Plan a savings account, work on bills together, and set aside money for special occasions.
Step3
Learn to compromise. Remember that you are two different people coming from two different backgrounds. Be willing to meet in the middle when you differ on issues. You need to learn to work together in order to form a unified bond.
Step4
Never go to bed angry. This old adage rings of truth! Allowing arguments to fester for too long will only create more tension and more dissatisfaction with your spouse. Separate for an hour if you need to collect your thoughts, and then come together again to reconnect.
Step5
Create a united front. Never let anyone speak badly of your spouse or your relationship. Guard this precious gift with your life by not allowing any outsiders to interfere in your marriage. Even if you don’t agree with your spouse’s opinion, support them in front of others to show them you respect their ideas.
Step6
Keep the passion alive. Just because you’re married doesn’t mean you’re no longer dating. Schedule weekly date nights to get you out of your house and back into society. You can even double date with friends. The point is to keep your social life alive after you’re married, so you don’t burn out on too much routine.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do special things for each other to remind each other that you're in love.
  • Eat supper together every night.
  • Take a lunch break together occasionally.
  • Make each other your top priority.
  • Don't allow friends to interfere with your marriage.
  • Don't spend more time with friends than your spouse.
  • Don't bring up the word "divorce" just because you've had a fight.
