How to Create Tousled Waves

Lightly layered hair falling below the shoulders is a popular and almost universally flattering cut. If you get bored with wearing yours flat-ironed straight, add tousled waves for a casually sexy, glamorous-but-not-stuffy look.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

• Volumizing mousse
• 1-inch curling iron
• 1 1/2 inch curling iron
• Finishing spray

1. Shampoo hair and start diffusing gently. Apply volumizing mousse while hair is still damp and use your fingers to tousle strands.

2. Curl top sections of hair, from the temple up, using a curling iron with a 1 1/2 inch barrel. Curl lower section with a 1-inch iron. Size sections randomly to keep the look imperfect and natural.

3. Full front sections of hair up and wrap lightly around the entire iron, barrel and clamp. Roll back from your face. Doing this rather than clamping the ends and rolling will produce loose waves rather than defined ringlets.

4. Gently loosen the curls with your fingers after they've cooled. Lift and shake the hair while misting it with a finishing spray. You're ready to head to the party.

Tips & Warnings

• Let any waviness in your own texture help you out. Don't blow-dry hair smooth before creating the curls.
• Don't touch the finished style before it's fully cool or you can get frizzies and flyaways.
