Step 1
Pick a real estate professional in the area in which you are looking. You may have an agent in the area you live in now and want them to work for you, but rural real estate is different and you need an agent who knows the area and the property values.
-
Step 2
Be sure you like to take care of the outdoors. Most rural homes will come with a good size piece of land. So if you are not keen on mowing the lawn, it might not be the right choice for you.
-
Step 3
Decide the type of country house you want. Most houses in the country will be very old, although there are other options as well. The number of new homes can be limited. Many rural communities want to remain that way and they have strict building codes. There are trailer parks, but mobile homes can be hard to get a mortgage on.
-
Step 4
Pick the type of area. In the country, you can be in a village, which is an incorporated part of a town or made up of parts of two towns. In a village you get more services, but also pay higher taxes. If you choose to live in a part of town that is not in the village, you are really in the rural areas. A village may have garbage pick up and sewers. A town may not. As a matter of fact, in many country areas, you either have to pay for trash pick up or take it to the dump yourself.
-
Step 5
Make sure your travel time will not be that long. If possible, drive from the area you are looking in to your job during rush hour. Check out the timing. In many cases, mass transit may be the better choice.
-
Step 6
Have the house you choose inspected. This is important with any home and with older country homes in particular. Many people choose to live in the country with the thought that it will be their retirement home and that is a good plan. When it come time to retire, you will be in a home that has a low mortgage, probably one that you can pay off fast and you can live your retirement years without monthly payments.
