Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Monitor your feelings when the season changes. Feelings of sadness and loss of energy when autumn turns to winter can be a sign of SAD. Everyone feels a sense of sadness every now and again, but to continuously feel this way when the two seasons change can definitely be caused by SAD.
Step2
Notice fluctuations in appetite and weight. An increase in appetite and weight gain during these months is a common indication of SAD. Everyone gains a little weight in the winter months due to holidays and inactivity, but an excessive gain (more than 10 pounds) can be an indicator of SAD.
Step3
Track changes in your sleeping patterns. Are you sleeping more than usual? Excessive sleeping during the winter months is a sign of SAD, and if you notice you are doing this more than you do in the summer and spring, then you may need to discuss it with your doctor.
Step4
Be aware of increased apathy or frustration. If you lack interest in social activities and find yourself more irritable than usual, then this is the time to talk to your doctor about the possibility of your having SAD.
Step5
If any of the steps above apply to you, look into light therapy or medication to help you through this time. Contact your physician or health-care adviser to talk over these issues, and decide together what course of treatment you might need.
