Having great hands is a key attribute as a wide receiver or running back in football. It’s even better to know how to get open before the quarterback throws. This is done through the art of route-running. Here is how to run sharper, crisper routes in football.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Quarterback/training partner
  • Cones or other markers to identify breaking points on the field
  1. Step 1

Go to the open field or gym with your training partner, and stretch out your hip flexors, hamstrings, quadriceps and back. Jog for a little bit to make sure these areas are loose and flexible.

  2. Step 2

Set up cones about seven yards in front of you on a yard line and one about six yards to the left of that to simulate an "in" or an "out" route. With your training partner simulating a snap, run to the first cone, and concentrate on lowering your weight on your lead foot, and planting it down hard at the first cone, and break as sharply to your left as you can.

  3. Step 3

Focus on getting to that first cone as quickly as you can, and work on planting hard and driving to your left toward the other cone. This is referred to as “the break.” Ideally, you want to be as close to the speed coming out of the break as you had before you planted. Work on that and keeping your balance while doing it.

  4. Step 4

Execute a few more plants and breaks. When you are comfortable coming out of your plan and break, work on driving your body hard to the left, rising up from the lowered position you were in when you planted. After the break, stay as straight on that line as possible.

  5. Step 5

Add in the catch component. Go through the simulated snap, break at the first cone, drive out of the plant while staying straight on that line, and catch the pass at the second cone. Continue to repeat these steps.

  6. Step 6

Move the cones around and simulate different routes that are typically run in a game. The out, post, slant, hook and dig all require a sharp break and immediate acceleration to get open.

Tips & Warnings
  • Bring a stopwatch and someone to time how quickly it is taking you to run a route in the correct manner. Record these times to chart your improvement.
  • Balance is essential in proper route-running. In training for the football season, jump rope. This provides balance training, which gets your body in rhythm. You need your body in sync with itself in order to get the quickest break out of your route.
  • If you begin to feel dizzy, light-headed or nauseous, stop immediately and seek medical care if necessary.
  • Do not continue if you have pain in your leg or feel a pop.
