Don’t you hate it when you go to have your hair done and when you come out you look amazing. The hairstylist explains everything to you and how easy it looks. When you go home and try it your self, no matter how hard you try, it never turns out the same. So you want to blow-dry your hair like the professionals? We can get you there with this easy to follow guide to blow drying.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
A. TOOLS
1. Get a professional blow dryer. I’ve found the Super Solano dryer to be the best deal for your money. It holds up to the daily abuse that only a hairstylist can give a blow dryer. I’ve had one for 12 years. I have abused this dryer more than you can imagine. Make sure you keep it clean and follow the blow dryer care instructions written by myself, Bill Schrlau.

2. Combs will be needed to detangle and section the hair for blow-drying. You will need one that has both large & small teeth. The longer your hair the larger the teeth should be. Find a comb that runs through your hair smoothly.

3. Clips are for sectioning the hair while blow-drying. If you take smaller sections in the blow-dry you will get a better result in the finish. There are duck bill & butterfly. If you have shorter hair the duck bill type will work for you. If you have long thick hair the butterfly clips may be your better choice.

4. Styling product- Okay, I like to save money as much as the next guy, however it is my experience that without product we can not create the salon looks that you are so craving to re-create at home. So make sure you consult your hairstylist on what works best for your hair. 3 styling is a max, do not over load the hair and if you have more that three challenges you are trying to solve at one time, good luck with that. Keep it simple; One product for thermal protection- a leave in conditioning product. One product for foundation, building texture in the hair. Then one last product for finishing, decide if you want it to be a spray or a shine base product, okay 4th you can finish with a light hairs pray.
Step2
B. To prepare for a blow-dry you need to start with pre-cleansed & conditioned hair. Use a shampoo that cleanses the hair but does not make the hair difficult to run a comb through. Use a conditioner that does not weight the hair down but gives it the moisture it needs to look healthy and shiny. For those of you dirty girls who like to go a couple days between shampooing (I love you, not only for the environments sake). Pre-wet the hair with your thermal protectant. You may not need additional product until you have shampooed again.
Step3
C. Now applying that very expensive product that has been recommended for you and only you. Begin with towel dried hair. If your hair is dripping wet, there is too much water in the hair. Your product will be wasted, the water will dilute it making it ineffective to your styling needs. Now that your hair is towel dried, start by lifting the hair at the scalp and placing your thermal protectent on the root area first, then mist over the ends. Use a comb to distribute this product through your hair. Then apply your foundation product to the top of the head, again root area where you need the most strength in the hair, then mist through the ends. Use a comb to distribute the product.
Step4
D. You have now completed the preparation needed for the proper blow-dry, the one that the professionals do.
