How to Replace a Laptop Modem With a PCMCIA Modem

Rate: (1 Ratings)

Most laptop modems are built into the motherboard of the computer and when it goes out, you can be left offline for weeks until you get it fixed. One solution is to have a back-up PCMCIA modem card or two, just in case this happens at a critical time and you need your computer for work deadlines.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • PCMCIA Card slot on your laptop
  • PCMCIA 56K Modem card
  • Driver disk for the modem
Step1
Make sure the PCMCIA modem card you are looking to purchase will work with your computer and your operating system. There are a number of modem cards on the market today that will not work with older operating systems and some that will not work with Microsoft XP or Vista.
Step2
Purchase the best card you can find for your computer. Look for the major names such as Xircom, 3Com and other recognizable name brands.
Step3
Slide the modem card into the PCMCIA slot on your laptop. In many cases the operating system will automatically recognize the modem and install the needed software. In others you may have to use the driver disk that came with the card. Follow the prompts on your computer screen to install.
Step4
Hook up your phone line and you’re ready to set up a new connection to your new modem. Follow the prompts in the Set Up New Connection Wizard in your Control Panel.
Step5
Click connect and be back online in seconds.

Tips & Warnings

  • It’s always a good idea to keep spare modems around for both laptops and desktops. They are cheap insurance for staying connected to the World Wide Web and email.
  • If you have a good working knowledge of your computer, disable the non-working built in modem. This will help to save on resources.
  • Always unplug phone lines with the connection is not in use and especially during any thunderstorms.
  • If your laptop is still under warranty and you can function without it, send it in to have the built in modem replaced.
  • EBay is a great place to purchase PCMCIA modems. Just be sure to check the sellers feedback and look for those that are guaranteed to work.
