Step1
Turn off the computer and remove all cords from the system AND the battery. The battery can still hold charge which can surge your hardware.
Step2
Find memory panel
Turn the computer upside down and locate the panel which allows you to access the RAM modules, for the laptop below the panel had a picture of a little ‘computer chip’ to indicate the memory panel.
Step3
Using either a precision Phillips-head or a small flat-head screwdriver, remove any screws that hold the panel in place and put them in a safe location.
Step4
Once all the panel screws have been removed, lift away the panel carefully.
Step5
Static electricity can kill computer parts so before touching anything inside the computer you should ground yourself by touching something metal such as a lamp or table leg.
If you are upgrading or replacing an existing memory module, remove the current one by pressing the clips on the side of the RAM outwards.
Step6
Slide it out on a 45 degree angle.
Step7
When installing a new RAM module, align the notch of the memory module to the notch on the laptop slide the RAM into the slot on a 45 degree angle. You may need to push hard as it can take 20 - 30 pounds of pressure to install.
Step8
Once the RAM has been pushed into the slot as far as it goes, gently push it down until the clips click into place
Step9
Once the laptop Ram has been clipped in to place, reinstall the cover and secure it with the two screws.
Step10
When the memory panel is secured, flip the computer back up the right way, plug in the power cord and boot it up.
Step11
If the laptop does boot up correctly, click on Start, Control Panel, System and Maintenance, System.
Step12
On the screen you will see how much ram is installed. It should be the updated amount of ram that you just put in.
Step13
If your computer does not boot up, if you receive an error message or a series of beeps then your laptop may not have recognized the new memory. Remove and reinstall the RAM to make sure that they are securely inserted into the slots.
If you get a memory mismatch error, follow the prompts and enter your computers setup. Then select Save and Exit. This isn’t always an error, a lot of laptops require this to install new RAM.
When you start the laptop you may get a message prompting you to update your configuration settings. If you press F1 to continue and save, it will recognize your new ram.

on 6/9/2008 Hello Ihite,
Did you find a solution for the hard-to-open back panel for memory module?
I'm afraid of breaking the panel you described as "covered half the back..."
Thanks.

on 3/27/2008 wow, those pictures look absolutely nothing like my Aspire 5100! but then again, the diagrams in the manual (at http://www.acerpanam.com/synapse/forms/portal20.cfm?recordid=1015&formid=3425&website=AcerPanAm.com/us&siteid=7293&words=all&keywords=&areaid=7 ) don't look like mine either (nor do they resemble these pictures). FWIW, to get to the memory compartment i had to remove a panel that covered nearly half the back of the notebook -- there were six screws, and even then i had to pry it off with a screw driver. very poorly designed.
