In this article you will learn the art behind Jason Bourne's fists. You'll learn how to defend yourself and others quickly and efficiently.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Internet Access
  • Martial Arts Equipment
  • Training Partner
  • Access to a Gym
  • Jeet Kune Do Instructor (optional)
  • Krav Maga Instructor (optional)
  1. Step 1
    Patience
    Patience

Understand this. You can learn to fight like Jason Bourne, but you will never be him. He is a fictional character, based purely on imagination. With that said, lets jump into the important stuff. Patience is key. Without practicing patience you will end up frustrated and most likely on the losing end of the battle. If you decide to practice your fighting styles and techniques, understand it will take years of practice to truly become a flawless fighter. More than likely, you will spend the rest of your life developing your skills.

  2. Step 2
    Strength Training
    Strength Training

Devise a work-out plan, apart from your actual fight training, that you can stick to. A basic routine for a moderately in shape guy would look something like this. Cardiovascular Training (Running, Rowing, Cycling, Swimming, etc.) - at least 3 days/week. Strength Training (Low Weight/High Repetition Lifting, Isometrics, Circuit Training, etc.) - at least 3 days/week. Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga (Power Yoga, etc.) - at least 5 days/week. Recovery - No matter how good you may feel, you need at least one good day of rest. No training of any kind should be done on this day. Take your time, and get the most out of each workout. Really strive to do more weight or higher reps then the last workout.

  3. Step 3
    Jeet Kune Do
    Jeet Kune Do

Technically, you should find a respected Jeet Kune Do Instructor, which will not be an easy task, depending on where you live. Finding a decent instructor may be so difficult you might rather learn on your own, in your own atmosphere. Obviously a home gym and martial arts equipment will have to be purchased, but some prefer it this way. If this is the case, I recommend reading and studying "Tao of Jeet Kune Do", an instructional book worked on by Bruce Lee himself. I also recommend downloading or purchasing Bruce Lee films, documentaries and/or visiting Expert Village dot com for training articles. Most importantly, understand that Bruce Lee developed Jeet Kune Do with variation in mind. There is no set katas or extremely precise techniques. It's all about what parts of Jeet Kune Do work best for you, understand there are no limitations. Learn to love the art of Jeet Kune Do.

  4. Step 4
    Krav Maga of New York
    Krav Maga of New York

Learn Krav Maga or Israeli Military Self-Defense. This is another case of weather or not finding a decent Instructor is possible. It should be easier to find a Krav Maga Instructor then it was to find a Jeet Kune Do professional. However, some may prefer to learn it on their own. If you plan to self-teach Krav Maga I recommend reading Krav Maga books, downloading instructional videos from Expert Village dot com and practicing your skills at full speed. This is a type of fighting that will allow you to disable and defeat your attacker quickly and realistically. It also deals with weapon defense and engaging, allowing you to disarm an attacker and properly equip yourself. So, if cracking bad guy's skulls is a passion, I throughly recommend studying Krav Maga!

  5. Step 5
    Counter-Attack
    Counter-Attack

Put it all together. After months and months of training, it's time to bring everything together. Ask your training partner to step up the sparring. Get the appropriate protection and really go at it. Learn to incorporate your Jeet Kune Do training into your Krav Maga self defense skills. Learn to be fluent in your movements, and try to make your first reaction the correct one. Practice with improvised weapons, in odd scenarios. Full speed training with pads will enable you to react accordingly in real life. This step is probably the most important. Do not slack off, seriously push your limits every sparring match. Always keep an extra set of hands close by in case of an emergency! As Bruce Lee once said, learn to move like water.

Tips & Warnings
  • There is no substitute for a great Jeet Kune Do/Krav Maga Instructor.
  • Train for real life situations, this is not meant to be a sport.
  • Really practice your Yoga, it builds strength, flexibility and balance. All play a vital role in survival.
  • Take a few firearm training courses, usually offered by private security companies.
  • Read, Study, Read again.
  • Fighting is extremely dangerous, obviously.
  • Jumping directly into a martial arts training regime, before a regular exercise routine is not a good idea. It can lead to all kinds of pulls, strains, breaks and dislocations.
  • Be responsible when sparring, while it needs to be at full speed to be fully effective... it doesn't mean take your partners head off.
  • Never look for a fight. Let the fight come to you and rule with an iron fist.

on 10/15/2009 Is it really possible to teach yourself a martial art if you've never learned one before? I find this highly dubious. There are so many little details you'd miss out on. If you're that brilliant, you'll probably end up creating your own martial art rather than actually following the book.
