Find Pictures on the Internet for Your Classroom

You so often look for pictures of things in your classroom--and the Internet is the perfect place to find them. Now, finding pictures on the Internet is easy--but refining your search and then knowing what to do with the pictures after you have them can save you tons of time. Let's take a look at some of the ways to find and use pictures from the Internet.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Go to Google and click on "Images" and enter whatever you are looking for. The more specific you are, the fewer results you will get.

  2. Step 2

Refine your search by specifying the picture size you want. Your choices include: Extra large, large, medium or small. Your choice will depend on what you are using the picture for.

  3. Step 3

Click on "Advanced Image Search" to narrow your search even further.

  4. Step 4

Specify what format you are searching for. I would estimate that 95 percent of the time you will be searching for a jpg which is by far the most universal image format.

  5. Step 5

Specify if you are looking for a color image or black and white image.

  6. Step 6

Drag the picture to your desktop or right-click the image and go to "Save As." The image is now yours to do whatever you want with (except sell it!).

on 3/16/2008 Not true, sorry to say. The images that come up on Google search are largely copyrighted. You can use them to a point within your classroom, to perhaps show kids a picture of the Empire State Building, but you can't publish the photo or image, and in some cases using it on a worksheet would also violate "fair use." A better search to use on Google is the advanced search feature. Open the part that says "Date, usage rights, numeric range, and more" and use the Usage rights pulldown to find images that have been permissioned through the Creative Commons for sharing, and even publishing and other commercial uses. Or go directly to the Creative Commons http://search.creativecommons.org/ and click on "Search for works I can modify, adapt, or build upon," click on Google or Flickr for images. (There are also other categories like OWL for music). All of these images are cleared for use.
