How to Relax Before A Blood Test

A lot of people experience some anxiety before and during a blood test, especially if they have a fear of needles. By knowing what to expect and performing some simple techniques, you can minimize anxiety and get through it in a snap!

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Know what to expect. For a blood test, the phlebotomist will wrap an elastic band around your arm. He/she will then swab the area of the blood draw to sterilize it before inserting a needle into the area. The area that is usually used is the fold of your arm behind your elbow.
When the needle is inserted, you might feel a slight pinch, but some people feel nothing at all. The blood will be drawn into a tube (this takes 10-30 seconds depending on how much blood is needed) before the needle is gently removed. You should feel little or no discomfort.
Step2
Look away. Turn your head and close your eyes
Step3
Try visualization. Close your eyes and imagine a place that makes you feel relaxed and at ease. Then start drawing that place in your mind, as vividly as you can. Imagine every sight, sound, and smell that you can remember.
Step4
Try deep breathing. Inhale through your nose and gently exhale through your pursed lips.
Step5
Tell the phlebotomist before your blood is drawn if you are prone to fainting or think you may feel faint during the blood draw. You can have your blood drawn while lying down to help avoid this.

Tips & Warnings

  • Unless you have been told not to drink liquids before the test, drink plenty of water 1-2 days before the test. This makes your veins easier to find and your blood run smoother, minimizing discomfort
  • Take a walk or do some mild exercise before the test to keep your blood flowing well
  • Applying a moisturizer a few times a day in the area where you expect the blood to be drawn can minimize discomfort
  • Always tell the phlebotomist before the blood draw if you are prone to fainting so that arrangements can be made to avoid injuring yourself
  • Always follow all the instructions you are given before a blood test. Be sure not to eat if you are taking a test which requires fasting
