Pests can be controlled, and it isn't all that hard. It can even be done largely naturally, since the common chemical treatments are also poisonous to other creatures. The best way is to prevent the pests from staying even before they start showing up.
Go to the store in early February and get a bottle of yeast powder or tablets. Available in health food stores. I like the powder, but you can also get the tablets and crush them.
Step2
Put the yeast in your pets food starting in February through to fleas season. Bugs do not like the smell of yeast powder and this will prevent them from getting a bug infestation.
Step3
Just sprinkle over you pets food where you can barley see it over their usual sized meal.
