How to Bathe a Shar Pei Puppy

How to Bathe a Shar Pei Puppy thumbnail
Be gentle and patient when bathing your Shar Pei puppy.

Shar Peis are a breed of dog known for their wrinkly appearance. While Shar Peis slowly lose their wrinkles as they grow older, Shar Pei puppies are heavily wrinkled. When bathing a Shar Pei puppy, use treats as rewards to ease the process because this breed of dog typically dislikes water.

Things You'll Need

  • Dog shampoo
  • Nonslip mat or washcloth
  • Plastic cup
  • Puppy treats
  • Towel
  • Hair dryer (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

Place a wet wash cloth on the bottom of the sink. If you are bathing your Shar Pei puppy in the bathtub, lay a nonslip mat in the bottom.

    • 2

Pick up the Shar Pei puppy and bring it to the bathing area. Speak in a calm, comforting tone and be patient because the prospect of a bath frightens many puppies.

    • 3

Use a treat to reward your Shar Pei puppy for standing calmly in the bathtub or sink.

    • 4

Turn the water on and set it to a lukewarm temperature. Never use very warm or hot water. Allow your Shar Pei puppy to get accustomed to the sound and reward it with a treat for good behavior.

    • 5

Use a plastic pitcher or cup to soak the puppy gently in water and pour a small amount of dog shampoo onto the puppy.

    • 6

Use your hands to gently lather your Shar Pei puppy's fur. Wash in between the folds of your puppy's wrinkles thoroughly.

    • 7

Use clean, lukewarm water to rinse your Shar Pei puppy's fur. Rinse all of the shampoo off the puppy's wrinkly skin.

    • 8

Remove your Shar Pei puppy from the sink or bathtub and wrap it in a towel. Leave its head exposed.

    • 9

Wash your puppy's head by pouring lukewarm water over it and using a small amount of dog shampoo to lather the area. Pour the water from behind and avoid getting water and shampoo into the puppy's eyes, ears, nose and mouth.

    • 10

Use lukewarm water to rinse your Shar Pei puppy's head. If desired, use the low-heat setting of a blow dryer to dry your puppy.

    • 11

Reward your Shar-Pei puppy with a treat once the bath is over.

Tips & Warnings

  • Never use a blow dryer on medium or high heat to dry your puppy. These temperatures can cause burns.

  • Be calm and patient; getting your Shar-Pei puppy used to being bathed can take time.
