How to Pick a Good Topic for Blogging

You want to join the millions of bloggers in the world. But you don't know why anyone would want to read what you have to write. Or care about your thoughts. Don't give in to that attitude. As vast as the world of blogging has become, there always are new angles to take on any subject. You just need to establish what you want to do better than anyone else in the world.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Determine your niche. What are you going to do better on this topic than anyone else in the world? You have to first know your competition. What else is out there about what you want to cover?
Step2
Think local. Typically that's where you can be most powerful. You can talk to people in your area and get first-hand knowledge, original knowledge, that you can share with others.
Step3
Imagine the multimedia possibilities. Your blog likely is going to have to incorporate more than just text to be dynamic and attractive, particularly to newcomers. What kind of video, photos and sounds can you incorporate, especially original material. That's another reason local is so important. You can get the goods that no one else can.
Step4
What about your topic is divisive? Start at the place that reasonable and intelligent people disagree, and you probably have an interesting portal into a subject.
Step5
Set goals for yourself. What do you want your blog to accomplish? What kind of work will that take? Start slow. Build your ambitions. It's much harder than you might think to maintain a blog, and it's particularly difficult to keep generating new and original thoughts and items to your blog several times a week. Think long range, and how much ground you can cover. If you want to post just twice a week for a year, that's more than 100 items you need to generate.
Step6
Make connections. Talk to other people blogging about your same general topic and try to get linked together. This will create a community that supports the ideas and generates discussion.
Step7
Let your voice come out. No one in the world is going to think exactly like you do, so that's another way you can make your site distinct, sharing more of yourself. This is about your interest in your topic, so become a significant voice on the matter.

Tips & Warnings

  • Write short. Blogs are for spurts of information, not manifestos.
  • Be flexible. Let your topic take you with it, as it develops and grows.
