1
Identify how you are spending money now. Do not expect to change your ways overnight. In fact think of ways you can avoid things you tend to splurge on. For example, if you tend to buy a lot of unneeded extras when grocery shopping. Try to go shopping less by buying enough groceries to last a week or two. If you splurge when you go to the mall, decide to only go to the mall when you need something, not just to window shop.

2
Evaluate your current spending and set goals that take into account your long-term financial objectives. To succeed here you must be realistic in your budget. Also include money for extras, like going to the movies or gifts that you buy. If you have a budget for this, you won't break it by treating yourself and will be able to skip the guilt trip.

Track your spending to make sure it stays within those guidelines. When needing to cut your budget it helps to know where it really goes. Sometimes it is easier to cut a fancy coffee habit when you know it costs $150 a month.
