Switching from a clay-based litter to an eco-friendly cat litter may not bode well with some finicky cats but in the end it is well worth the effort. Clay based litters are not only terrible for the environment but also have the potential to cause serious health problems for you and your cat. Types of eco-friendly cat litter include varieties made from corn cobs, wheat, woodchips and recycled paper pellets.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Eco-friendly cat litter
  • An extra litter box
  1. Step 1

Set up the extra litter box filled with your choice of eco-friendly cat litter near the clay litter box to see if your cat will take to the alternative litter.

  2. Step 2

If your cat takes to the new box, remove the clay litter cat box. Give your cat plenty of time to become familiar with the new product.

  3. Step 3

If your cat will not use the eco-friendly cat litter, remove the new litter box.

  4. Step 4

Mix the clay litter with the eco-friendly cat litter at a 4:1 ratio and wait about a week for your cat to get acclimated.

  5. Step 5

Be sure to keep the box clean, scooping out waste at least once a day.

  6. Step 6

Try using a different type of eco-friendly cat litter. For example, if you first tried wheat based cat litter, try a corn cob litter repeating the steps.

  7. Step 7

Make sure to reward your cat each time she uses the litter box with praise or treats.
