Chemical flea sprays and topical pesticides not only kill fleas but also put you and your pet at risk for health problems. Making your own flea spray is an easy and cost efficient way to prevent flea infestations when you also offer your pet a high quality diet.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 4 lemons
  • 2 tablespoons of salt
  • A pot
  • 6 cups of water
  • Stove
  • Mesh strainer
  • Large spray bottle
  • Mild dog and/or cat shampoo, preferably organic
  • Flea comb
  1. Step 1

Cut the lemons into thin slices and place them in a large pot.

  2. Step 2

Cover the lemons with the water and add the salt.

  3. Step 3

Turn the stove onto high heat and bring mixture to a boil. Let boil for two minutes and then turn the stove off.

  4. Step 4

Let the mixture steep for 24 hours.

  5. Step 5

Bathe your dog or cat thoroughly with a mild shampoo. Any kind of soap will kill fleas so you do not need to use a flea shampoo loaded with chemicals. Let the soap set for five to ten minutes before rinsing well.

  6. Step 6

After your pet's bath, comb out his or her coat with a flea comb to remove dead or dying fleas.

  7. Step 7

When your flea spray is finished brewing, strain the lemons and their excess pulp from the liquid and pour it into the spray bottle.

  8. Step 8

Regularly spray your dog or cat with the homemade flea spray to kill fleas that are currently hitching a ride on you companion pet and to prevent new ones from coming. It’s a good idea to also spray your pet’s bedding or other areas of your home where your pet spends a lot of time.

Tips & Warnings
  • Sprinkle dichotomous earth on floors and carpets for added flea control.
  • Make sure to feed your dog or cat a high quality organic diet to help them fend off fleas and other parasites. Fleas are not successful if your pet’s immune system is working in optimal condition.
  • This natural flea spray is safe to use on puppies and kittens of any age.
  • If your pet is severely infested with fleas seek medical help. Fleas can be deadly in large numbers. You will be able to see hundreds of fleas and thousands of black specs called “flea dirt” in the event of a sever infestation.
  • Avoid getting the flea spray in your pet’s eyes, it will sting.
