To begin, I bow to you forward as an act of honor...Welcome to learn a how to in the learning of Kung Fu...

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Shaolin Kung Fu white top and pants
  • white belt
  • strength and politeness
  1. Step 1

In the beginning of learning Shaolin Kung Fu you must approach a place to learn it, being a black belt's apartment to a 6th degree black belt's dojo...but you need a place to learn....

  2. Step 2

Once you found a place to learn it, you must get suited up for practice. You will begin as a white belt.

  3. Step 3

Now you must know that the Shaolin were originally monks of the Orient that devised Kung Fu in those large temples as a perfect and honorable act of warfare...Trips to China may be offered at the dojos to train with some Shaolin monks but it is very expensive to go....

  4. Step 4

Your first step. Your hands keep constantly concealed while doing Kung Fu with your Index finger curling into your palms while the rest of your fingers follow...Your thumb lays against your curled hand steadily...clench your fists and keep the back of your hand pointing upwards....

  5. Step 5

Next, learn to crouch down and bend your knees....I have heard it be called the horse riding stance but it is the basic position for doing Kung Fu....

  6. Step 6

Finally it is time to kick forward...You master your balance and while in the crouched step, you kick your right leg outwards very sturdy...You learn thru instruction how to alternate and kick with both legs and how to punch forward your left and right arms....

This point in Education is called a Trial, would you like to go furthur with this form of Martial Arts? I hope so!

Tips & Warnings
  • make sure you have some money put away to be able to afford lessons and possibly trips!

on 2/7/2009 Yes the learning of Shaolin Kung Fu is incredibly vast so it's difficult to summarise and requires a long study to master. Trying to hold that horse stance, called "Mabu" in Chinese is a testiment to the hard work that is training. Some schools in China become not so expensive to train at if you stay for a long term (see http://www.shaolinskungfu.com/schoolfees.html). A unique and wonderful way though to train the mind and body, I encourage anyone inclined to give it a go.

on 4/11/2008 Ahem...What?
That is...what kick are you referring to? Front snap, side, round, crescent? Is it "forward" or is it "outward", your directions say both, but that really isn't practical (if possible).

The steps outlined do not give a beginner any details as to what actions they are performing with their hands or their feet, other than back of fists pointing upwards (?) a technique I am not familiar with.

"Horse Riding" stance (actually called "Horse Stance") is not the best place to launch alternating kicks from, and could encourage sprains in the groin muscles/tendons.

"San Ti" stance, tiger stance, and any stance where feet are offset forward and back (not in-line as in horse) lend themselves to kicking much more naturally.

Horse stance is great for ceremonial purposes, for training strength in the legs, balance, for lowering your center of gravity in a rear attack or grapp
