Ozone therapy is a new dental innovation that actually can help heal cavities. This means that a cavity that would traditionally have required drilling and a filling might not need this procedure. Currently, there are only a handful of dentists in the US using the procedure, but the technique is quite popular in England, Germany, New Zealand and Canada.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Things You'll Need:

  • Healozone patient kit
  • Your regular dental regimen, such as toothpaste with fluoride, dental floss, and mouthwash with fluoride
  • Willingness and patience

    Ozone Treatment

  1. Step 1

Find a dentist using Healozone by visiting one of the sites listed in the Resources section below. If you have trouble locating a dentist in the United States, contact a dentist elsewhere to ask about US dentists using Healozone.

  2. Step 2

Set up an appointment with the dentist you choose to use for your Healozone treatment. Most likely the first visit will be a consultation. The dentist will tell you about Healozone and do an examination of your teeth and how Healozone could benefit you.

  3. Step 3

Part of the examination of your teeth will include the use of a laser, called Diagnodent, to detect the amount of decay, if any, in each tooth. The diagnodent reading can be anywhere from 0 to 99.

  4. Step 4

Know that a reading of 0 to 20 means you have the beginning of a cavitated lesion. Twenty to 50 means you most likely have a cavity. Fifty or more means you have a deeper cavity.

  5. Step 5

Consider that the treatment of involves application of ozone using Healozone. The dentist places the Healozone handpiece in your mouth, and the suction cup on the end goes over your tooth to form a seal. The ozone is then delivered to your tooth.

  6. Step 6

Know that depending on the degree of decay, the ozone is left on for a certain amount of time. For a diagnodent reading of 0 to 20, the dentist may only use ozone for 20 seconds. For much higher levels, such as 99, two minutes or more may be used.

  7. Step 7

Consider that for medium and large cavities, the dentist may drill away some of the decay or open up the decayed area first, so that the ozone is more effective. If this is done, generally after ozone the dentist will place a Fuji 7 seal, which provides fluoride to the tooth while it heals. This also protects the tooth. A temporary filling may also be used.

  8. After the Ozone Treatment

Get a patient kit for your use at home to help the tooth remineralize. The kit contains a special toothpaste, oral rinse and spray.

  10. Step 2

Use the toothpaste twice per day and the rinse or spray three times per day.

  11. Step 3

Come back to check and see if your teeth have remineralized. If not, a second treatment of ozone may be used.

  12. Step 4

Know that if the teeth have remineralized, then generally they have a glassy and hard surface and are resistant to further decay. If the decay was deeper and some tooth structure was removed, a Fuji 7 seal will be placed followed by a permanent white filling.

Tips & Warnings
  • Healozone therapy involves much less discomfort than drilling and filling. The procedure is generally painless.
  • Ozone therapy can be used for a tooth that has decay close to the nerve, sometimes eliminating the need for a root canal. The dentist drills away a good bit of the decay, stopping before reaching the nerve. The ozone is used, with the hopes that the area near the nerve will remineralize and harden, thus protecting the nerve.
  • If the decay has reached the nerve, the dentist will follow the same process of removing most of the decay, but leaving some tooth structure over the nerve. The ozone will permeate the nerve, getting rid of the infection and bacteria and helping the nerve to heal along with the tooth structure remineralizing. This may be able to prevent a root canal as well!
  • If you have deeper decay, the dentist might recommend more than one ozone treatment, to give your teeth a better chance to remineralize and heal. For instance, you might have treatment every two weeks for a period of months instead of just one treatment and a potential second one at the three month time.
  • Healozone is not currently approved by the FDA in the United States. Clinical trials began at three different locations in the USA, with the hope of gaining FDA approval after the results of a 12 month study on the effects of Healozone and its safety. Site is listed in the resources.
  • Most healthcare plans will not pay for Ozone therapy, because it has not even been approved by the FDA in the United States yet. Plan to have to pay for the treatment out of pocket.
  • It is essential to follow through with the use of the patient kit as instructed to help your teeth have the ability to remineralize!
