For many people, Florence is the town they pass through when they make the turn toward Myrtle Beach for a weekend of fake tattoos, cheap beer and sunshine. With many historical landmarks and a worthy golf course, Florence deserves to be more than a pit stop on your trip.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

In the South, the Civil War never happened. It is the "War between the States" or often "The War of Northern Aggression." Florence chose the former when coming up with an idea for a museum. The site contains numerous guns and ammunition as well as artifacts from a Union stockade that was housed in Florence during the war.

  2. Step 2

The southern part of Florence contains numerous horse farms and opportunities to learn more about equines.

  3. Step 3

Get out and golf. There are more than 30 golf courses in Florence County. A popular one is the par 72, 18-hole Oakdale Country Club on West Lake Drive. Dining facilities are available after a long round as well and the green fee is around $30.

  4. Step 4

Don't leave without checking out Francis Marion University, which is named after a Revolutionary War general who was the basis for the movie, Patriot, starring Mel Gibson.

  5. Step 5

Visit Florence during one of their many festivals. The Skirmish At Gamble's Hotel festival takes place in early March every year where there's a re-enactment of March 5, 1865, when Colonel Reuben Williams and 500 of his federal soldiers arrived in Florence to destroy the railroad depot.
Some other festivals include the Pecan festival and the Southern Plant & Flower Festival.

  6. Step 6

If you have children you should visit Mister Mark's Fun Park. It has miniature golf, go-carts and an arcade. It's open seven days a week and the prices are very reasonable. Miniature golf cost $4 to $5 depending on when you go, and go-cart price is $3.
