How to Solar Cook Pinto Beans

Beans take a long time anyway ... why not save some energy and cook them with the sun? Serves six as a side dish.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Solar Ovens
  • Cast-iron Pots
  • 2 c. dried pinto beans
  • 1 1/2 tbsp. salt
  • 1 tbsp. black pepper
  • 1 ham hocks
  1. Step 1

    Place all ingredients with 6 c. water into pot.

  2. Step 2

    Place pot in solar oven.

  3. Step 3

    Cook for five hours.

Tips & Warnings
  • For shorter cooking time, soak beans in three times their volume of cold water for six hours or overnight.
  • Add some Tabasco or other hot sauce to the beans when they're done.
  • Turn solar oven to face the sun for optimal heat.
  • Black pots, such as cast iron, hold heat better.

on 7/30/2009 Cooking pinto beans in bare castiron will turn them an unappatizing purple color. Use enamel coated castiron, stainless steel, or aluminum instead.
