How to Spot Celebrities in Los Angeles

Celebrities are everywhere in Los Angeles. Athletes, musicians, actors and more exist at every turn. There are so many, in fact, that there's at least one (on a slow night) within a square mile of you no matter where you are in Los Angeles proper. What's also true is that you rarely see a celebrity if you're trying to. You might notice a phenomenon in L.A. where everyone is always staring at you when you enter an establishment, no matter what you look like. It's because they're trying. It's because they're so used to seeing celebrities that they have to look at every single person who passes just so they don't miss one. These people are inherently lame. Don't be these people. Be like this...

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Nothing important to concern yourself with
  1. Step 1

Change your perception of what a "celebrity" really is. Celebrity doesn't mean the chosen few who get to grace the covers of "Us Weekly," "In Touch" and "People" for the three months that they're hot. Celebrity really means anyone who's ever been in or done anything, ever. If you recognize their face and they're not a friend or family member, they are a celebrity.

  2. Step 2

Do stuff. "Stuff" could be anything, really. But just go about your day. It's a good idea to "do stuff" in West Hollywood, Hollywood, Los Feliz or Silver Lake. Beverly Hills, maybe. But you'll soon realize that Beverly Hills is mostly for tourists.

  3. Step 3

Go to coffee shops. They can be chain coffee shops, that's fine. But for some reason, celebrities just really, really like coffee. The logic doesn't add up, though. It's hard to understand why you'd want to be jacked on caffeine when you don't do anything all day.

  4. Step 4

Go eat at Sunset Plaza, a strip of affordable but fashionable restaurants on Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood. You can eat a meal there for a more than reasonable price ($15) and celebrities love to be seen there.

  5. Step 5

Have an early-evening cocktail in Hollywood. Don't pick an all-out dive, but don't go to posh, either. To be honest, the latter won't let you in.

  6. Step 6

Go see live music in Silver Lake. For a little SAT prep course action to make it digestible, Silver Lake is to musicians what Hollywood is to actors. And, there are few actors who prefer the laid-back, winding, tree-lined roads of Silver Lake to the urban, dress-up-to-dress-down Hollywood. Jason Lee and Adam Goldberg are common sightings here. They really enjoy looking like they like obscure music.

  7. Step 7

Wake up in the morning and hike in Runyon Canyon. This is a no-leash hiking trail in Hollywood where any dog owner within 10 miles goes. It's also the kind of place where people who actually hike don't go. But it is a nice trail despite the heavy scent of dog urine. And you're bound to see someone famous there feigning and interest in nature.

  8. Step 8

Scale the wall at Paramount Studios (corner of Gower and Melrose) and sneak around until you see someone famous or until you get caught.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep in mind it is not lame to do these things. This also happens to be a great way to see the city if you're just visiting.
  • Walking up to a celebrity and asking for an autograph or telling them how much you love what they do could result in you looking like a loser.

on 10/18/2009 This article is great, and I'll certainly bare it in mind when I visit.
I wrote an article recently say how people- celebrity or none are all the same.
