Step1
Register the address where you are seven days of your arrival in Germany you must. Bring your passport, lease (if you have one) and a piece of mail. Where you register depends on the town you are living in. Search the web or ask friends where you can receive your “anmelden.”
Step2
Locate your nearest immigration office. The “Ausländer Behörde” is where you will receive residency permits, tourist visa extensions and work permits.
Step3
Visit the Ausländer Behörde to pick up an application for a residency permit. If you are not fluent in German bring a translator.
Step4
Obtain health insurance. There are many websites where you can purchase reasonably priced travelers insurance.
Step5
Fill out your forms and call the Ausländer Behörde to schedule an appointment with a case worker. Before your appointment, assemble a folder with your completed application form, anmelden (proof of address), health insurance, bank statement, proof of income and passport photos.
