Do you want your kids or the kids you teach to learn music? Do you want to incorporate music in your family but do not feel you have the necessary knowledge? You may be surprised that you do not have to look any further than your PC, the Internet and software programs to be on your way to accomplishing this enriching task. Read on to learn how to use a computer to teach kids music.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Computer
  • Microsoft Windows
  • Music software
  • CDs
  • Time
  • Internet

Step1
Click on the links after the bottom of this article to obtain the software and for more resources about music on the Internet.
Step2
Look for software (CDs or DVDs) available for your Windows computer and install it following the prompts on your screen. You can also look for others who are selling the software they no longer use.
Step3
Click the icons on the desktop or Start menu to start the programs once you install them. Instruction manuals can generally be found by accessing the help menu for that software at any time. Very few come with paper manuals anymore. There could also be a PDF (Adobe) manual that is installed with your software.
Step4
Depending on the age of the child, you may want to start with "Little Leaps" software, "Sesame Street Music Maker," "Musical Adventure" or "Jump Start Music."
Step5
There are also various instrumental "Dummies" series books and instructional CDs available. See link below for more information.
Step6
Allow children to play the software on the computer and experiment. Do not make judgments. Then, if a child wishes to play an instrument, find a used, very inexpensive or rental instrument until you know they will stick with it.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can also get software for Macintosh, which is extremely helpful for teaching music in homes and schools.
  • Decide what age group and instrument or goals you wish to accomplish before you search for resources.
