Depending on the version of Windows you are running on your computer, these directions may vary slightly, but the process is essentially the same to turn off sound on a dial up modem.

Double click the (sound) Phone and Modems Options Choice in the control panel screen. Windows options are usually listed in alphabetical order on this screen, although the view may vary slightly in different versions of Microsoft Windows.

Click the Modems tab, on the second choice from the left in the dialog box on your screen. Your modem brand will be displayed. Inside of that screen, click the Properties button. This takes you closer to sound turn off. There is a photo of sound options here.

  4. Step 4

Slide the button all the way to the left underneath the "Volume" option in the modem options screen. Note: click "OK" while in phone and modems screen to save your new sound settings which should now be turned off.

  5. Step 5

Return to your desktop inside of Windows. If you want to set it, disconnect your phone Internet connection and restart it. You should not hear any modem connection sound, as you have turned it off.

  6. Step 6

Comment below to tell me your modem and computer stories. I love to hear them and will return your comments. Hope this computer article helped you dial up Internet members!

Tips & Warnings
  • Test your new settings by attempting to connect to the Internet. You should not hear any connection sounds but you will see the connection icon in the lower right hand corner on your Taskbar, as always.
  • Perform this only on your own computer.
