Things You'll Need:
- Drywall knife
- Wall receptacle and hardware
- Screwdriver
-
Step 1
Determine the height and location of the electrical outlet box. Cut out an area of wall material with a drywall knife so that the small outlet box fits snugly into the hole. Push out the rear round metal plug that allows electrical wire to pass through.
-
Step 2
Feed the electrical wire from the rear of the outlet box to the breaker box. Turn off all power to the house before continuing the project.
-
Step 3
Study the home's electrical diagram and determine the switch in the breaker box to wire the electrical outlet to. Wire in the black and white wires to the home's main switching panel. Consult with a qualified electrician if you're unsure of the process.
-
Step 4
Route the black and white wires through the wall and into the outlet box from the rear. Match the wire colors to the new outlet receptacle. The white wire must connect to the white receptacle screw or and black to black or to the screw marked "HOT." Use a screwdriver to attach wires to setscrews.
-
Step 5
Connect the green ground wire to the green grounding setscrew on the outlet receptacle.
-
Step 6
Reinstall the electrical outlet box into the wall and secure with the provided hardware. Finish with an appropriate wall plate. Return power to the home and test circuit with a circuit tester.
