Whether you're a serious magician or just want to have a quick bar trick ready to impress the ladies, the gaffed coin is a prop that you can begin with in a few minutes of practice. The tough part of presenting magic with trick coins is to get the coin that's right for you.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Stop at a magic dealer and check for something that has quality. The biggest part of the trick comes from people believing that the coin is real. If it smacks of fake in the case, it won't get any more believable once you pay for it.

  2. Step 2

Find a trick coin that's at your level of experience. Start easy. Remember, even though a trick is easy doesn't mean it's not impressive. Most people have no idea that gaff coins exist.

  3. Step 3

Pick up the coin that you think you like. Feel the coin in the palm of your hand and toss it into the other to make sure the weight feels right to you. Look for imperfections that might give the trick away. You may have to pay a little more for a coin that looks and feels good, but you'll be unhappy if you don't.

  4. Step 4

Expand your horizon. If you already have accomplished some of the basic maneuvers, look for a coin that helps you learn more advanced techniques. Some coins come with instructions for several tricks that can be performed. Get the most for your money.

  5. Step 5

Buy from people in the know. Whether you buy online or in a store, quiz private dealers to find out why they're selling the item, how it was made and how much they know about magic. True magicians understand the importance of a good prop.

  6. Step 6

Check for damage before you buy. Look the coin over carefully for any flaws in the mechanism. Be aware of any clicks or noises that may occur if there is a sliding or clamping mechanism. All these things give away the trick. Most of the time, it's because the magician loses confidence and a small click sounds like a cannon going off in their head.

  7. Step 7

Remember, you usually get what you pay for. You won't get real silver or even metal at the dollar store. Whether you shop on line or in the local magic shop for magic trick coins, get the best that you can afford or don't buy it at all.
