Before you can make a metal ring, you'll need to make a ring mold out of jeweler's wax. Jeweler's wax is sold by the ring size. So once you know the size ring you want to make, you can buy your jeweler's wax and start making your mold.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Jeweler's wax
  • Wax carving tools
  1. Step 1

Trim your jeweler's wax so that it is close to the width of the ring you want to make. Usually jeweler's wax comes in a long tube. By trimming it, you'll get a more realistic sized ring.

  2. Step 2

Begin shaving down the height of your wax ring. The jeweler's wax will be much thicker when you buy it that you would ever want a ring to be. By shaving it down, you can make a more realistic ring that is comfortable to wear.

  3. Step 3

Carve a design into your wax mold. Your final ring will look just like your wax mold. If you dig into the wax, your final ring will also have a depression. Likewise, where ever your wax is high, the metal of your ring will be high too.

  4. Step 4

Use heat and fine grain jewelry saws to smooth the surface of your wax mold. This is the finishing step in the process. You need to make sure there are no marks on the wax that will show up as unpleasant bumps in your final jewelry piece.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be careful not to shave off too much wax initially. If you make your ring thinner than you intended, you might have to throw out your hard work and start over.
