How to Clear Water Out of Snorkel and Mask

Snorkel and dive gear that fit well are essential if you want to get the most out of an underwater experience. But even the best quality mask and snorkel can get water in them on occasion. You can do several things to minimize the chances of encountering a leak, but once it happens you need to quickly clear your mask and snorkel to ensure your continued pleasure and safety in the water.

Instructions

1. Blast water from your snorkel to clear it. To do this, simply exhale forcefully through the mouthpiece to blow the water up and out of the barrel. If a small amount of water remains, give it a second blast.

2. Clear water from your mask by holding the top of your mask firmly against your forehead and begin exhaling through your nose.

3. Tilt your head back slightly while continuing to exhale. The air from your nose will force the water out the bottom of your mask.

4. Remove your hands from your mask and resume your adventure.

Tips & Warnings

• Remember when blasting water out of the snorkel, you have to blow quick and hard as if you were blowing through a big pea shooter.
• Mask clearing is easiest when you exhale steadily and continuously through your nose.
• To help ensure that your mask seals well, tie your hair back if it's long or wet your hair and push it all back before putting on your mask. Just a few strands stuck in the rubber seal are enough to allow water to seep in.
• Never snorkel or dive alone. Even the most experienced divers always take a buddy along. Not only does it help ensure your safety if an emergency arises, it's also more fun to experience your underwater adventure with a friend.
