Sun salutation or salute to the sun is a flowing series of yoga vinyasa poses. It helps strengthen the muscles around the spine and promote flexibility. Sun salutation is an excellent warm-up for your yoga practice. This vinyasa yoga posture also helps tone the abdominal muscles to promote a strong core.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Begin your sun salutation in tadasana, which is also called the mountain pose, standing with your feet hip width apart with your arms either at your sides or in prayer.

  2. Step 2

Inhale as you sweep your arms around and up over your head, arching your back.

  3. Step 3

Exhale as you dive down into a forward bend with your hands planted on the floor next to your feet. You may bend your knees if you need to. Inhale as you elongate your spine.

  4. Step 4

Step back with one foot, as you exhale into a lunge. Then step your other foot back into plank position and then into downward facing dog. Relax in the downward dog pose and elongate your spine and look forward.

  5. Step 5

Put one foot gently back between your hands, or at least close to your hands, back into the lung. Then bring the other foot up where you're at the head-to-knee position.

  6. Step 6

Inhale as you extend your arms around and over your had, then exhale coming back up to tadasana.

  7. Step 7

Repeat this sun salutation yoga posture at least three times.
