Valve cover gasket replacement is part of the process of replacing a blown head gasket. In order to do this, you must know where the valve cover gasket is located. This can be slightly different on different vehicles, but will look relatively the same.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Understand the importance of the valve cover gasket. This is the part of the engine that holds the oil in, to keep it from leaking. It is located between the cylinder head and the valve cover. The gasket is often made of rubber, silicone or cork. Some engines may have as many as four of these gaskets, depending on the engine.

  2. Step 2

Locate the valve cover. This is usually right on the top of your engine. If you have a V8 or V-style engine, there will be two valve covers and valve cover gaskets. The valve cover is the metal part covering the cylinders and the valve cover gasket.

  3. Step 3

Look in your vehicle's repair manual if you are having trouble locating your valve cover and valve cover gasket. It should be fairly easy to locate once you know what you are looking for. If you are continuing to have trouble, consult with a professional mechanic.

  4. Step 4

Remove the valve cover by removing the bolts holding it on so you can locate the valve cover gasket. This is the seal under the valve cover. Inspect the seal for visible signs of corrosion or wear and tear. If there is cracking, corrosion or other damage, it will need to be replaced.
