If you want to get a tattoo, choosing one that is meaningful and attractive can be a hard decision. There may be many options that you find desirable, but remember, tattoos are permanent. Make sure you truly want to ink up your skin before you go under the needle.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Realize that pigments are not the same as ink. Pigment is a mixture of glycerin, alcohol and water. Ink is simply colored liquid and is permanent once applied.

  2. Step 2

Check out some designs before you commit to just one. Know what your options are before the tattoo artist begins the process. Usually a tattoo parlour has hundreds of tattoos posted on their walls for you to view and choose.

  3. Step 3

Decide whether you would like to get your tattoo in color or in black. Black tattoos last longer than colored tattoos. Black tattoos also provide less sun damage to the skin because they are made from a solid ink.

  4. Step 4

Select your design. Ask yourself whether you want it to reflect someone, something, or a special event in your life. You can even choose to design your own tattoo and present it to the tattoo artist.

  5. Step 5

Find a good tattoo artist, and ask him how he sanitizes his needles. Know that you are in the right hands before getting a tattoo because it is a permanent addition to your body.
