While learning to tap dance, you learn many basic steps that become a part of many more intricate dance step movements. Learn how to do one of the basic steps, called the ball change movement.
Stand with your feet together for your starting position. You are preparing to do the ball change step or movement which is a two count step.
2
Shift your body weight slightly to your left foot while you lift the right foot. You are preparing to do the ball change movement, leading with your right foot.
3
Step the right foot slightly behind the left foot by touching the "ball" of the right foot on the floor to make the "tap" sound. This is count one and the "ball" portion of the name of the step "ball change." You are lightly shifting your body weight to the ball of the right foot during this movement.
4
Pick up the left foot or "change" to the left foot and stomp it down flat footed while the ball of the right foot is on the floor as in Step 3 above. This is count two or the "change" portion of the name of the step "ball change." The left foot simply lifts up and stomps down in the same spot where it started.
5
Repeat and reverse the steps above to do the "ball change" step with the left foot.
6
Practice the "ball change" step or movement to develop speed, flow and rhythm.
7
Add the "ball change" step to other tap steps to form combinations such as "shuffle ball change" or "shuffle hop step ball change." The more you practice, the more ways you will find to incorporate the "ball change" step or movement into your tap dance routines.
