Tap dancing can be very fast-paced at times. It's also the type of dance that burns the most calories per hour. When you're learning a new tap dance step, feel free to take your time while learning. As you improve, do the tap step more quickly. Many steps that look very difficult are actually simple steps done very quickly.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Tap shoes
  1. Step 1

Bend your knees in a demi plie. You've bent too deeply if your thighs are parallel to the floor. Just bend slightly.

  2. Step 2

Shuffle your right foot out to your right side, brushing the ball of your foot off the floor as you move your foot away from your body and back toward your body.

  3. Step 3

Perform a shuffle with your left foot out to the left side as you place your right foot back on the ground.

  4. Step 4

Do another shuffle to the right as you place your left foot down. Shuffle to the left again.

  5. Step 5

Dance another shuffle to the right and then to the left. Repeat.

  6. Step 6

Scuff your right heel off the ground, hop and then place the ball of your right foot on the ground. Repeat this sequence on the left side. Perform a ball change by stepping completely on your right foot and then stepping on your left foot about 6 inches in front of your right foot. Your right and left feet should be parallel.

  7. Step 7

Repeat Steps 2 through 6 to complete another series.

Tips & Warnings
  • Wait to increase your speed until you've mastered the step completely. Gradually build your speed over time.
