Tang soo do is one of the most widely practiced martial arts in the United States with origins in Korea. Taught as a competitive sport and fitness method, tang soo do is unique to other methods as it focuses on self-defense technique rather than combat fighting. Once you have become familiar with the basic moves of tang soo do, you can put it all together in point spar.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Safety gear
  • Sparring partner
  1. Step 1

Wear all of the proper safety gear when point sparring to protect both you and your sparring partner. Safety gear should include head gear, mouth guards, gloves, cups (for men) and padded shoes.

  2. Step 2

Use one of the two types of contact when point sparring in tang soo do: touch-contact or no-contact. Touch contact means you try to only lightly impact your sparring partner. No contact, obviously, means you try to aim for no contact at all. These types of touch help to ensure that you can practice your tang soo do skills without causing harm or being injured yourself.

  3. Step 3

Begin point sparring by facing the fight moderator and bowing. Turn and face your sparring partner and bow. Enter into your fighting stance, or your four-point stance and simply begin sparring.

  4. Step 4

Keep your hands up in guard position at all times and try to use all of the tang soo do techniques that you have learned. Wait for the moderator to call, and then step away from your partner. Facing your partner, bow and then turn to the moderator and bow again.
