The tango is the dance of Argentine gauchos--a macho, assertive dance relying on strength as well as grace. Not pre-choreographed, it is up to the man to decide when to do which steps. Leading your partner in a promenade is a skill that every male dancer can use to feel macho, just like a modern Argentine gaucho.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Dance partner
  • Tango shoes
  1. Step 1

Hold your partner close but not tight, with your right hand firmly on her back. Cradle her right hand gently in your left hand.

  2. Step 2

Face your partner. Complete a basic tango step by stepping forward with your left foot, stepping forward with your right foot, stepping forward with your left foot, stepping sideways with your right foot, and moving your left foot next to your right.

  3. Step 3

Show your intentions to move into a promenade by turning your feet a quarter turn out from your torso.

  4. Step 4

Move your partner into the promenade position by firmly pulling your right hand towards you. Guide the left side of her back towards you, causing her to turn slightly towards her right on her axis so that her feet are facing the same direction as yours.

  5. Step 5

Be assertive. It is your responsibility in the tango to direct your partner where you want her to go.

  6. Step 6

Keep the close contact with your partner after beginning the promenade so that you can continue to lead her into the next steps.
