Three-step sparring in taekwondo is a routine that provides practice and exercise. When done repetitively, a taekwondo student develops better hand-eye-foot coordination and cadence. Three-step sparring in taekwondo involves punching and moving forward if you are the attacker.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Bring your left foot to your right foot and bow to your partner.

  2. Step 2

Move your left foot back out about shoulder-width apart with your arms hanging down in front of you and hands made into fists.

  3. Step 3

Step back with your right leg about the length of a long stride. At the same time, pull your right arm back to your side with your hand in a fist, palm facing up. Also, do a downward, outer block with your left arm, stopping when your arm is parallel to your left thigh and the palm of your fist is facing down.

  4. Step 4

Kihap, or yell, to let your partner know you are ready to begin, and your partner will do the same when she is ready for you to begin your attack.

  5. Step 5

Move forward with your back (right) leg and throw a midsection punch with your right hand. The punch will require you to twist the arm because your fist is facing palm up at your waist, and you want to land the punch with your palm down.

  6. Step 6

Repeat the previous step on the left side.

  7. Step 7

End the three-step spar by repeating on your right side.
