Most free-standing tents require you to string the tent rods, or poles, through their channels or loops before you can assemble your tent. Stringing the rods through is a fairly easy process, especially if you understand the basic structure of your tent.

Things You'll Need:

  • Tent
  • Support rods
  1. Step 1

Prepare your campsite and lay your tent out where you want it. Though you can move your tent after you string the rods through, it's easier to completely assemble your tent right on your campsite.

  2. Step 2

Assemble your tent rods if you need to. Most designs require you to screw or snap the poles together before you insert them in your tent, though some rods unfold and snap into position. You should have at least two rods. If you're using something other than a dome tent, you may have additional rods.

  3. Step 3

Check your tent to see how you need to insert the rods. Newer dome tents usually have sleeves that you push the poles through, with small pockets to fit the rods into on the corners. If it's an older style, you might find rings in each corner and loops or rings on the tent to hold the rods.

  4. Step 4

Push each of your assembled tent rods through the sleeves, loops or rings. You may need to pull the slack out of your tent material to more easily string the rods through the sleeves. If you do this, spread the material back out after you put the rods through.

  5. Step 5

Place one end of each tent rod into its corner pocket or ring. You finish assembling the tent by slipping the second end of each tent rod into its pocket or ring.
