Take time to remove the strut to knuckle mounting bolts properly, so they can be reused upon reassembly. You should also take time to check the condition of each bolt and part along the disassembly process, looking for excessive corrosion and cracking.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Remove the wheel to your vehicle and secure your car on jack stands. Also, find adequate lighting for seeing in behind the wheel mounting area. This is where your strut connects to the suspension knuckle. Detach the anti-lock brake sensor.

  2. Step 2

Spray some penetrating oil or lubricant on the knuckle mounting bolts and allow it to sit for awhile. This penetrating oil can be WD-40 or Liquid Wrench. It will break the corrosion off the nuts and allow you to remove them without causing further damage to them.

  3. Step 3

Break both nuts loose with the appropriate size socket. It is important to break them both loose at the same time in order to allow them both to come out without any problems. Start with the top nut to remove it completely. Use another ratchet on the back to hold the bolt in place while you remove the nut.

  4. Step 4

Use your socket as a punch once you have the nut close to the end of the bolt to push the bolt out the bolt hole. This is the best way to do this so you don't mushroom the treads which will cause you to have to replace the bolt. Use a screwdriver and hammer to push the bolt completely out of the hole. Repeat this process for the lower knuckle mounting bolt.
