The springs on the strut mounts can be extremely dangerous, even deadly, if not compressed securely before removing the top nut. This can be done in just a few minutes with a couple of basic tools. If you have not done this before, it may help to have an extra set of hands available.

1
Purchase a universal style strut compressor. This is a strange looking device that goes around the strut and clamps into the spring in various places to keep it in place. They are available at most automotive tool outlets or online directly from manufacturers like Branick. They can be quite expensive, so be sure to find the right one for you before investing.
-
2
Remove the strut from the vehicle and carefully set it down on the ground in front of you. Place yourself on a stool or milk crate with the items you need handy--a speed wrench and the universal style strut compressor you purchased.
-
3
Attach the universal style strut compressor to the strut. There is a series of hooks that go on the spring and safety pins to keep the pressure of the spring from throwing the compressor off. Use the speed wrench to tighten the two screws on the top of the compressor until the spring is no longer touching the strut mount.
-
4
Check that nothing on the compressor is loose and the spring is compressed tightly. Double check that the strut mount is no longer in contact with the spring, and it is now safe to remove the upper strut mount nut.
