Step 1
Place yourself in the Southern Shaolin horse stance when practicing the reverse punch. While you can throw this punch from virtually any kung fu stance, for practice purposes, it is best that you are in the horse stance with a strong foundation.
-
Step 2
Hold your fists at your waist with your elbows in tight to your body as you quickly make a clockwise circle with your right foot, stepping out to the side. Repeat on the left side, making a counter-clockwise circle and landing your foot so that in your final position your feet are about 3 feet apart. Bend at the knees, placing your weight in your quads and hips.
-
Step 3
Make sure that your thumbs are pointed up when placed at your waist. Begin the reverse punch, throwing your arm straight out in front of you. Keep your elbow in tight to your body and make sure that it does not turn out to the side during the punch. As your throw the punch, rotate your hand so that your thumb turns in and your knuckles are horizontal.
-
Step 4
Pull the punch in faster than you throw it out, a common technique in Southern Shaolin kung fu which will help you improve your continuous fighting skills. Practice the reverse punch in slow motion until you have perfected the move. Once mastered, work on speeding it up as fast as possible.
