With origins in the Shaolin monastery in Southern China, Southern Shaolin kung fu is one of the most powerful forms of martial arts ever developed. Taking technical influence from yoga and Indian martial arts, Shaolin kung fu focusus on a continuous attack fighting style which limits the opponents ability to strike. The reverse backfist is a basic move important to winning a fight with this style of kung fu.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Use the reverse backfist from virtually any Southern Shaolin kung fu stance when using the technique in combat or competition. However, when practicing this move, it is best to begin in horse stance.

  2. Step 2

Enter horse stance by placing your fists at your waist with your elbows in tight to your body. Move your right foot forward and slightly to the left as you begin to make a clockwise circle and ending with your foot about 1 1/2 feet to the right. Repeat this move with your left foot to complete the horse stance. Step your left foot forward, beginning the counter-clockwise circle slightly to the right before stepping out to the left.

  3. Step 3

Begin by first throwing a jab or a reverse punch. It is most likely that your opponent will try to block your jab. Use the reverse backfist either after his block or directly following your jab or punch. After your first strike or after the block, bring your fist down towards your waist, making a circle. Continue the circle up and around to begin the reverse backfist.

  4. Step 4

Turn your fist so that your palm is facing towards you when your fist begins to make the upward circle. Strike your opponent, aiming for the nose with your knuckles. Remember that the technique in Southern Shaolin kung fu is based on speed, so practice the move slowly at first, and once perfected, practice making the punch and reverse backfist as fast as possible.
