Shaolin kung fu is one of the most powerful forms of martial arts and originated in the Shaolin temple in Southern China. Taking influences from yoga and Indian martial arts, many followers of Southern Shaolin kung fu feel it is more a way of life than a fighting style. The low block kick is one of the most basic, yet most important techniques in this kung fu style.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Consider a kick to be a low kick if it aims at any part of the body from the bottom of the ribcage down. Remember to protect your center, as Southern Shaolin kung fu, unlike other martial arts styles, teaches its students to keep their hands up at all times.

  2. Step 2

Use the low kick block from any kung fu stance, using the basic principles of Southern Shaolin. Lift your front leg as fast as possible, bringing your knee to your chest to first protect your groin area. Make sure that you lift and recoil your leg as fast as possible. If you hold your knee in the bent position, your opponent can quickly sweep you to the ground.

  3. Step 3

Lift your leg fast and tight, moving your heel as close to your buttocks as possible and your knee and upper thigh as close to your stomach as possible. Keeping the low kick block tight will ensure that your opponent cannot attack your groin area from around the back.

  4. Step 4

Drop your leg and enter directly into another Southern Shaolin fighting stance in order to continue your attack with your upper body, swinging punches, clawing or using other techniques.
